Zanzibar President pays his last respect to the late Charles Hillary

ZANZIBAR: ZANZIBAR President, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, led Tanzanians in paying final respects to Charles Hilary, the former Director of Presidential Communications and Chief Spokesperson of the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, who passed away on May 11, 2025.

The last respect event was held at Mapinduzi Square in Unguja, where government officials, media professionals, family members, and citizens gathered to pay last respect to the late broadcaster for his contribution to the nation and the media sector.

In his tribute, President Mwinyi praised the late Hilary for his patriotism, work ethic, and unwavering commitment to serving the country.

He revealed that Charles accepted the high-profile position without hesitation when he requested him to join his administration.

“When I needed someone to lead presidential communications, I called him myself. I tried to approach it diplomatically, but he responded without delay. He said, ‘Out of respect for you, I accept — I’m ready to serve,’” President Mwinyi recalled.

He added: “That selfless response showed the depth of his patriotism, and I remain grateful for his service.”

Dr Mwinyi also urged Tanzanians to celebrate and appreciate the efforts of public servants while they are still alive.

“One key lesson we take from today is the importance of recognizing our people when they do well, not waiting until they are gone to speak of their virtues,” he said.

“I regret not telling Charles sooner how much I valued his work. I will honor his legacy by fulfilling the goals he worked so hard to advance.”

The late Charles Hilary was a veteran journalist with a distinguished media career spanning more than three decades.
