Scribes’ union mourns passing of Charles Hilary

DODOMA: THE Union of Tanzania Press Clubs (UTPC) in Dodoma has joined other media stakeholders in expressing heartfelt condolences following the passing of the Director of Communications at the Zanzibar State House Mr Charles Hilary.

The UTPC remembers the late Hilary as a seasoned journalist who was a true mentor and a staunch advocate for professional ethics throughout his career.

Speaking to the Daily News yesterday, UTPCDodoma Chairperson Mr Mussa Yusuph described the late Hilary as someone who was always generous in sharing his knowledge, particularly with younger journalists.

“Charles Hilary was an exemplary figure who not only excelled in his field but also mentored countless young journalists. His teachings about upholding ethical standards and the value of professional conduct will remain invaluable,” Mr Yusuph said.

He also said that Hilary’s work with international media outlets was a model of patriotism, always safeguarding Tanzania’s image on the global stage.

“This serves as a crucial lesson, particularly for journalists working with international outlets. Some forget that they represent Tanzania and sometimes use their platforms to tarnish the country’s image. Hilary never did that, he always had the nation’s best interests at heart,” Mr Yusuph added.

He said that the late Hilary always insisted he importance of professional ethics, proper language use and best practices in the field of journalism. Beyond his work in hard news, Mr Yusuph noted that Hilary made an indelible mark in the world of sports journalism, especially in football commentary.

“His voice was unmistakable. Whether reporting live from the pitch or providing insightful analysis, it was clear he was a master of his craft. He was known for his neutrality, never showing bias toward any team. His commentary was always marked by objectivity and honesty,” Mr Yusuph remarked.

The late Hilary, affectionately known as ‘Nkwanga,’ passed away yesterday morning while being transported to Muhimbili National Hospital’s Mloganzila branch in Dar es Salaam for treatment after falling ill.

In 2021, Zanzibar President Dr Hussein Mwinyi appointed Hilary as Director of Presidential Communications.

In 2023, he was named Chief Spokesperson for the Zanzibar Government. Hilary’s media career began in 1981 when he joined Radio Tanzania (now TBC Radio), where he worked until 1994.

He then moved to Radio One Stereo and, after nearly a decade, joined the German broadcaster Deutsche Welle (DW).

In 2006, he became part of the BBC Swahili Service. Later, Hilary returned to Tanzania, where he joined Azam Media as a producer, presenter and football commentator.

In his final years, he was appointed by President Mwinyi as the Director of State House Communications and Chief Government Spokesperson.
