Tanzanian lawyer’s global honour elevates nation’s prestige

DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA has gained renewed international recognition following the conferment of an Honorary Doctorate of Leadership and Governance upon Advocate Bernard Berchmance Mbakileki, one of the country’s most accomplished legal scholars and public servants.

The award was presented during the inaugural African Leadership & Governance Masterclass and Honorary Doctorate Conferment Ceremony held in Kigali, Rwanda, from April 27 to 30, 2026.

The honour, awarded jointly by the American University of Peace and Governance in Texas, USA, and the Chartered Institute of Peace and Governance USA, represents not only a personal milestone for Advocate Mbakileki but also a significant moment for Tanzania’s academic, legal, and governance reputation on the global stage.

It underscores the country’s growing contribution to leadership excellence and institutional development across Africa and beyond. The event, organised by Greenfield Executive Education in partnership with UNIPGC Africa, brought together eight distinguished leaders from across the African continent.

Over the course of four days, participants engaged in an intensive programme that combined high-level executive training, a formal recognition ceremony, and cultural experiences within Rwanda’s capital, Kigali.

The masterclass focused on contemporary leadership challenges, governance innovation, and strategies for sustainable development, areas that are increasingly vital for Africa’s progress in a rapidly evolving global landscape. Advocate Mbakileki’s recognition comes after more than five decades of dedicated service in law, maritime governance, and public administration.

His career reflects a rare blend of technical expertise, leadership, and commitment to national and international service. As a former aide to Tanzania’s founding President, Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, he was directly involved in shaping early governance frameworks and contributing to the country’s foundational policy direction.

Over the years, he has held several high-profile positions, including Secretary General and Chief Executive Officer of the Inter-Governmental Standing Committee on Shipping, Corporation Secretary of the Tanzania Harbours Authority, and Director General and CEO of the Tanzania Central Freight Bureau. His influence has extended beyond national borders, notably when he chaired the First Committee of the United Nations Geneva Diplomatic Conference in 1982.

This historic conference led to the adoption of the International Convention on Multimodal Transport of Goods, a key framework that continues to guide international trade and logistics systems.

Currently, Advocate Mbakileki remains active in legal practice as Managing Partner at Kanywanyi, Mbakileki, Mtaki and Nditi Advocates in Dar es Salaam, where he continues to mentor younger legal professionals and contribute to the development of Tanzania’s legal sector.

Speaking after receiving the award, Advocate Mbakileki expressed his appreciation and reflected on the broader significance of the recognition. He noted that being honoured alongside other distinguished African leaders was both inspiring and motivating, and he commended the organisers for creating a platform that fosters knowledge exchange and leadership development across the continent.

“I am deeply inspired to be among the distinguished leaders conferred with this Honorary Doctorate,” he said.

“I commend Greenfield Executive Education for the excellent coordination of the programme and look forward to continued engagement as we collectively work towards strengthening leadership and governance across Africa.” The conferment ceremony was presided over by Ambassador Dr Jonathan Ojadah, President of UNIPGC Worldwide, and coordinated by Ms. Lilian Ugorji, International Program Coordinator of Greenfield Executive Education.

Their leadership ensured a seamless and impactful event that highlighted the importance of recognizing excellence while also building capacity for future leaders. Beyond the personal achievement, this recognition carries important implications for Tanzania’s position on the global map. Honours of this nature serve to showcase the country’s intellectual capital and reinforce its reputation as a source of capable and visionary leaders.

They also contribute to strengthening international partnerships, academic collaborations, and professional networks that can benefit Tanzania’s development agenda. Importantly, such achievements have the potential to inspire the younger generation. As Tanzania continues to invest in education and skills development, examples like that of Advocate Mbakileki demonstrate the value of pursuing studies in law, governance, public administration, and related fields.

These disciplines are critical for building strong institutions, promoting accountability, and ensuring effective leadership at all levels of society. For many young Tanzanians, particularly those in universities and higher learning institutions, this recognition highlights the opportunities that exist within academic and professional pathways focused on governance and leadership.

It sends a clear message that dedication, discipline, and a commitment to excellence can lead to global recognition and meaningful impact. Furthermore, the integration of executive education programmes such as the African Leadership & Governance Masterclass provides a model for continuous learning and professional growth.

In an era where leadership challenges are increasingly complex, there is a growing need for leaders who are not only academically qualified but also equipped with practical skills and a global perspective. Encouraging youth to engage in such studies can help prepare a new generation capable of addressing national and continental challenges effectively.

Greenfield Executive Education, as the organising institution, plays a vital role in this process. As a premier executive learning and leadership recognition body, it is dedicated to identifying, celebrating, and equipping Africa’s most outstanding leaders. Through initiatives like this masterclass, it contributes to building a pipeline of skilled professionals who can drive transformation across various sectors.

The recognition of Advocate Mbakileki also highlights the importance of lifelong learning and sustained professional excellence. His career demonstrates that leadership is not a static achievement but a continuous journey of growth, service, and contribution.

This perspective is particularly relevant for young people, who are encouraged to view education not merely as a means to employment, but as a foundation for innovation, leadership, and national development.

As Tanzania continues to position itself within the global community, achievements such as this serve as powerful reminders of the country’s potential. They reinforce the idea that local expertise can have international impact and that Tanzanian professionals can compete and excel on the world stage.

Ultimately, the honour bestowed upon Advocate Mbakileki is both a celebration of individual excellence and a reflection of Tanzania’s broader aspirations. It is a testament to the country’s commitment to developing strong leaders and advancing knowledge in fields that are essential for progress. For the youth, it stands as an invitation to pursue meaningful studies, embrace leadership opportunities, and contribute to shaping the future of Tanzania and Africa at large.
