Tanzanian Choki drills for WBC bout against South African

DODOMA: TANZANIAN professional boxer Juma Choki, popularly known as King of the Ring, is engaged in the training ahead of the World Boxing Championship bout against a South African pugilist in June this year.

The Tanzanian youth is set to fight against the South African Bekizikwe Maitse, also known as Dr Sleep, in the Round of 16 of the WBC on a date to be announced later.

The fight is being organized under the supervision of the World Boxing Council (WBC), with the official date yet to be announced.

Choki advanced to this stage after defeating Bryx Piala from the Philippines on points in a Round of 32 bout held on April 17, 2025, at the Global Theater Boulevard in Riyadh City, Saudi Arabia.

Bekizikwe Maitse is no stranger to the boxing scene. He is the son of renowned boxer Bongani Mahlangu, a former ABU champion who has had several matches against Tanzanian fighters. In 2021, Bongani defeated Tanzanian boxer Tony Rashid by TKO, but in 2022, Rashid avenged the loss with a win on points.

In 2023, Bongani returned to Tanzania to contest for the WBC Africa title against Tanzania One, Fadhili Majihana, but was defeated on points.

Boxing fans in Tanzania have high hopes for Juma Choki, expecting him to proudly represent the nation and make history on the global professional boxing stage.
