Tanzanian begins the 2nd phase registration to provide health insurance cover to persons with disabilities

DODOMA: PRIME Minister Dr Mwigulu Nchemba has said the Tanzanian government has begun the second phase of registering citizens under the Universal Health Insurance Scheme to reach persons with disabilities and other groups that have not yet benefited from the programme.

Dr Nchemba made the remarks in Dodoma on November 5, 2026, while responding to a question from Special Seats MP Stella Ikupa, who sought to know the measures being taken to ensure access to medical services for persons with disabilities who have not yet been covered by the scheme.

He said the first phase of registration targeted children, older persons and persons with disabilities.

Dr Nchemba said the government would work with leaders representing these groups to encourage citizens who have not yet registered to join the scheme, stressing that Universal Health Insurance is intended to cover all Tanzanians regardless of their economic status.

He also urged health institutions to continue using the exemption window to provide medical services to persons with disabilities and other special groups who have not yet been enrolled in the scheme.

He emphasised that no one should be denied access to healthcare because of disability or financial constraints.
