DAR ES SALAAM: THE Tanzania XV Select rugby team delivered a strong performance against the visiting Tritons Rugby Club from the UK, winning 38-20 in a friendly match at the Aga Khan Ground in Dar es Salaam on Saturday.
Captain Nassibu Haji shone on the field, scoring two tries and leading his team to a commendable victory.
Following the match, Tritons team leaders Tony Dunkerley and Jonathon Beswick commended the Tanzanian side for their skill and determination, highlighting the competitive spirit that made the encounter thrilling.
Dunkerley expressed his admiration, stating: “We came to Tanzania a day before the game and immediately went to a training session with local children, donating rugby balls and kits generously provided by our sponsors.
“We truly enjoyed the game today. Although we hoped for a different score, rugby was the real winner. The Tanzanian team demonstrated remarkable skill and speed and their community spirit was evident. They played exceptionally well, and we were outplayed.”
Dunkerley noted that the heat posed a challenge for the Tritons, especially playing at noon, but he remained proud of their efforts, particularly given that many team members were meeting for the first time.
He noted the valuable lessons learned during this match, which they would carry forward as they prepare for upcoming tours in Kenya and Uganda.
Beswick echoed Dunkerley’s sentiments, remarking on the tough nature of the match.
“We had an overnight flight and although we were tired, the team came together. Tanzania played a fast game, particularly in the backs and they deserved the win.”
Both leaders expressed their fondness for Africa and their desire to return for future matches, highlighting their connections with the region.
