Tanzania, UNDP partner to connect power to the Energy Ministry’s headquarters

DODOMA: THE Ministry of Energy, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), is set to implement an Energy Efficiency Project at the Ministry’s headquarters before expanding it to the entire government city in Mtumba, Dodoma.

The Commissioner for Electricity and Renewable Energy, Eng Innocent Luoga revealed this during a meeting with UNDP Project Manager Aaron Cunningham held in Mtumba, Dodoma, to discuss implementation modalities of the initiative.

At the meeting, Commissioner Luoga said the project will begin at the Ministry of Energy building, where small-scale power generation systems using solar and wind energy will be installed, alongside energy-efficient infrastructure aimed at ensuring a clean and reliable electricity supply.

He added that the initiative will also include the installation of electric vehicle charging stations within the premises and designated parking areas.

“We are starting with the Ministry because it is responsible for overseeing the energy sector, so it can serve as a model for other government institutions and the private sector. Later, the project will be rolled out across the entire government city in Mtumba. This will help reduce electricity costs and ensure a reliable power supply,” he said.

On his part, UNDP Project Manager Aaron Cunningham said the agency is ready to continue working with the Ministry of Energy, noting that they have been collaborating on various impactful projects benefiting both communities and the nation.

He added that similar cooperation has already produced significant results, including an energy efficiency strategy whose 10-year framework was launched in December 2024.
