Tanzania supports UNESCO’s initiatives in protecting World Heritage sites

DUSAN: TANZANIA has joined global conservation stakeholders in advancing discussions on protecting World Heritage sites as the 48th Session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee concluded in Busan, Republic of Korea.

The meeting, which ended on July 29, 2026, brought together representatives from countries that are parties to the 1972 World Heritage Convention and international conservation partners to deliberate on the preservation, management and sustainable development of world heritage sites.

Key issues discussed included the conservation status of listed heritage sites, proposals for new sites to be recognised, and emerging threats facing natural and cultural heritage, including climate change and increasing human activities.

Tanzania actively participated in the discussions, contributing ideas on heritage conservation, ecosystem management, biodiversity protection and the use of scientific approaches to strengthen sustainable environmental management.

The country’s participation focused on sharing experiences and strengthening international cooperation in protecting natural and cultural heritage in line with the objectives of the 1972 World Heritage Convention.

The National Environment Management Council (NEMC) has also continued to support government efforts to ensure Tanzania’s World Heritage sites are protected and managed through sustainable conservation practices, responsible resource use and compliance with international environmental agreements.

Through participation in global platforms such as the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, Tanzania continues to exchange knowledge with other nations while contributing to collective efforts to safeguard world heritage and the environment for present and future generations.
