Tanzania sinks 100bn/- for bridge construction in Lindi

LINDI: THE government has allocated over 100bn/- to improve the infrastructure of 10 durable and permanent bridges, along with three culverts, in Lindi Region.

This announcement was made today by the Minister for Works, Abdallah Ulega, during a visit by the Secretary of Ideology, Publicity, and Training for the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party, Amos Makalla. The visit took place in Somanga Ward, Kilwa North Constituency, where Makalla inspected the Somanga-Mtama Bridge as part of his 10-day tour of the Lindi and Mtwara regions.

Minister Ulega stated that the funds aim to strengthen transportation infrastructure, particularly bridges and major drainage channels, in order to address challenges such as the collapse of bridgesoften occurring while contractors are still working on-site.

Speaking about the construction of the Somanga-Mtama Bridge, Ulega explained that the bridge spans 60 meters and is being built using 43 pillars. So far, the contractor has successfully driven 26 pillars into the ground, each extending 12 meters deep, to establish a strong foundation for the bridge.

The government continues to collaborate with various stakeholders to enhance transport and logistics infrastructure, to spur social and economic development for residents of the southern regions.
