Tanzania sees success in training transport professionals to address air pollution

DODOMA: AS part of the World Environment Week celebrations, the National Institute of Transport (NIT) has reaffirmed its commitment to training transport professionals who are equipped to safeguard the environment, particularly by addressing the environmental impact caused by motor vehicles such as cars, trucks, and motorcycles.
Speaking during the celebrations, the Head of the Department of Safe Transport and Environmental Engineering, Eng Patrick Makule, said the transport sector is among the leading sources of air pollution due to the emission of harmful gases. Therefore, it is essential to train professionals in this field on ways to reduce these negative effects.
“We are equipping our students with a broad understanding of sustainable transport, the use of clean technology, and the importance of adhering to environmental standards in transport engineering,” said Eng. Makule.

He added that NIT is committed to providing hands-on education and conducting research to improve transport systems, ensuring their safety for humans and environmental friendliness.
According to NIT, this initiative is part of both national and global efforts to combat climate change and protect public health.
On the government side, the Deputy Minister in the Vice President’s Office (Union and Environment), Mr Khamis Hamza Khamis, commended NIT for its efforts in empowering Tanzanian youth and integrating the transport and environmental sectors sustainably.
Speaking in Dodoma during his visit to the Environment Week exhibition, Hon. Khamis said that educational institutions like NIT are crucial in ensuring that young people receive the right education to participate in national development without harming the environment.
He expressed satisfaction with NIT’s innovation in addressing environmental challenges through environmentally friendly transport education. Additionally, he emphasized that the government will continue to collaborate with institutions like NIT to enhance development equity and environmental conservation.
Deputy Minister Hamza was accompanied by the Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Hon. Dunstan Kitandula.
