Tanzania sees medicine, medical supplies provision jump from 73 percent to 88.8 percent

DODOMA: THE Ministry of Health has enhanced efforts to strengthen the availability of medicines, medical supplies, diagnostics, and other health commodities across the country, with availability reaching 88.8 percent in February 2026, compared to an average of 73 percent in 2021/22.

This was disclosed by Health Minister Mohamed Mchengerwa while presenting a report on the status of health commodity availability to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Mussa Azzan Zungu, and the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and HIV/AIDS in the small chamber of the Parliament in Dodoma.

Minister Mchengerwa noted that the report shows availability of 382 priority commodities with stock sufficient for over one month increased from 49 percent in 2021/22 to 73 percent in 2025/26. Additionally, commodities with stock exceeding four months rose from 25 percent to 40 percent during the same period.

He added that the average availability of medicines and medical supplies in health service delivery points has increased from 73 percent in 2021/22 to 88.8 percent in February 2026.

According to the presented statistics, national, specialized, and zonal hospitals achieved an availability rate of 97.68 percent, while regional referral hospitals reached 95.93 percent.

Furthermore, district hospitals recorded 83.81 percent, health centers 82.83 percent, and dispensaries 79.46 percent, reflecting progress in the government’s efforts to improve access to essential health services and commodities for Tanzanian citizens.
