Tanzania, SDIG investors advance talks on implementation of Mchuchuma coal, Liganga iron ore projects.

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Minister for Industry and Trade, Judith Kapinga, has held talks with investors from SDIG, a company expected to implement the Mchuchuma coal and Liganga iron ore projects.

Minister Kapinga said the project is expected to officially commence in 2027 and will be implemented in six phases covering mining, production and infrastructure development.

She said the first phase will involve the development and operation of a coal mine, while the second phase will focus on the development of an iron ore mine.

According to Minister Kapinga, the third phase will involve the construction of a plant to produce specialised coal for iron smelting using coal as the energy source.

She said subsequent phases will include the construction of an iron and steel production plant, a power generation facility that will use steam produced by the steel plant, as well as the construction of a 70-kilometre road linking Mchuchuma and Liganga.

Minister Kapinga said implementation of the project is expected to boost production and investment in Tanzania’s industrial and mining sectors.

She added that the implementation of the Mchuchuma and Liganga projects will contribute to Tanzania’s efforts to achieve a tri   US dollar economy by 2050.
