Tanzania, Japan ties in the energy sector goes to the next level with advanced technologies in power generation

DAR ES SALAAM: THE cooperation between Tanzania and Japan in the energy sector has entered a new phase, with increasing emphasis placed on attracting private sector investment and introducing advanced technologies in power generation.
The development was highlighted in Dar es Salaam during a meeting between the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy responsible for Petroleum and Natural Gas, James Mataragio, and the new Chief Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency, Kuge Katsuya.
During the discussions, Mataragio outlined the government’s strategy to position the energy sector as a major destination for international capital, particularly from Japan. He stressed that the next phase of cooperation should focus on larger-scale investments capable of increasing electricity generation and improving energy access across the country.
“This is the time to encourage Japanese private companies and financial institutions to directly invest in energy projects in Tanzania,” he said.

Reflecting on the long-standing partnership, Mataragio noted that JICA has been a key development partner in the energy sector, contributing to the preparation of the Natural Gas Utilization Master Plan (NGUMP), capacity building for experts, and implementation of various power projects in the country.
He also referenced Japan’s long-standing commitment to support the implementation of a 300-megawatt power project in Mtwara.
On his part, Kuge Katsuya outlined a new direction of cooperation focusing on training in nuclear energy technology, improving efficiency in natural gas-based power generation, and connecting Tanzania with Japanese private investors to accelerate energy sector development.
