Tanzania in talks to bring Tyson, Mayweather to revitalize the country’s  boxing

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Tanzanian government has begun talks to bring global boxing icons Mike Tyson and Floyd Mayweather Jr. for a series of sporting events aimed at promoting and revitalising boxing in the country.

Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports Paul Makonda revealed this during the “Battle of Revenge” boxing night held at the EACLC Building, saying the discussions involve collaboration with boxing stakeholders from Arab countries, including Dubai and Saudi Arabia, alongside Tanzania’s boxing leadership.

In addition, the Minister said that the government has taken a central role in coordinating the potential visit in partnership with organisers of Mafia Boxing Promotion.

He noted that the two boxing legends were initially scheduled to headline events in the Democratic Republic of Congo before coming to Tanzania, but changes in plans prompted the government to directly oversee the process.

Moreover, he said that  the planned visit is expected to include engagement with more than 800 registered local boxers, offering mentorship and exposure to international experience.

An international boxing event is also being lined up, potentially featuring fighters across different levels, including elite bouts, as part of efforts to elevate the sport’s profile in the country.
