Tanzania honours 7 sites linked to Africa’s liberation, archeology

MOROGORO: TANZANIA has declared seven sites linked to Africa’s liberation history, along with archaeological reserves, as national heritage for them to be recognized, preserved, and legally protected.

According to a statement issued today, October 2nd, 2025,by the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports on Thursday, the sites were declared through the Government Notice No. 582 of September 26, 2025, which was signed by the Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism, Ambassador Pindi Chana, on August 26, 2025.

The ministry mentioned the sites as the ANC freedom fighters’ camp at Mazimbu in Morogoro, the FRELIMO freedom fighters’ camp located at Samora Machel Secondary School, and the freedom fighters’ camp at Kihesa Mgagao.

Other sites are the residences of Chief Fundikira and Chief Isike, and other historical locations.

Moreover, the ministry stated that the government has continued to declare historical sites and archaeological reserves through Government Gazette notices, in accordance with Section 3(2) of the Antiquities Act, which empowers the Ministry responsible for Antiquities to establish and declare archaeological reserves in the country as national heritage, with the possibility of later being recognized as World Heritage.

The declaration of these sites aims to recognize, conserve, and protect them under the Antiquities Act, while also designating them as key attractions for promoting historical tourism in Tanzania.
