Tanzania, Germany in talks to enable health, energy, natural resources projects deliver direct benefits to citizens

DODOMA: TANZANIA and Germany have opened bilateral talks aimed at strengthening development cooperation, with a focus on projects expected to deliver direct benefits to citizens and contribute to national economic growth.

The talks, held at the Ministry of Finance conference hall in Mtumba, Dodoma focused on strategic areas including water and sanitation, health, energy, sustainable use of natural resources and environmental conservation.

Other areas that the leaders focused on at their discussion are access to justice, sound public financial management and gender equality.

Opening the bilateral talks, Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, Elijah Mwandumbya, who represented Permanent Secretary Dr Natu El-Maamry Mwamba, said the meeting is part of the long-standing development partnership between Tanzania and Germany, which dates back more than six decades as cooperation between the two countries dates back to the 1960s, when the founding leaders established the foundations for bilateral relations.

“In 1975, Tanzania and Germany signed a Framework Agreement that established the basis for advancing cooperation between the two countries,” Mr Mwandumbya said.

Elaborating, the PS noted that Germany had remained an important development partner for Tanzania in various sectors, including water, communications, tourism, human development and social welfare and that the discussions would enable experts from both sides to assess and prioritise projects and areas of cooperation to be implemented over the next two years.

According to the Permanent Secretary, once discussions are concluded and agreements reached, the two governments are expected to take further steps to formalise the arrangements, including signing a development cooperation agreement.

The talks are also expected to continue in November 2026 as the two countries work towards finalising areas of cooperation and agreed development priorities.
