Tanzania, Finland deepen ties in mining through expertise in mineral beneficiation, smelting, mineral value addition
PORI: TANZANIA and Finland are strengthening cooperation in the mining sector through the exchange of experience and expertise in mineral beneficiation, smelting, metal refining and mineral value addition.
The cooperation aims to enhance the skills and capacity of Tanzanian experts in managing the mineral value chain, particularly through the use of modern and sustainable technologies designed to increase the value of minerals produced in the country.
As part of efforts to advance the cooperation, a delegation of experts from Tanzania’s Ministry of Minerals, in collaboration with the Geological Survey of Finland (GTK), met with the management and experts at Metso Corporation’s laboratory in the city of Pori, Finland.
Metso is among the companies involved in technologies and solutions for mineral processing, beneficiation, smelting and metal refining, as well as technologies aimed at improving efficiency and sustainability in the mining industry.
Speaking on the significance of the visit, Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Minerals, Msafiri Mbibo, said Tanzania intends to continue implementing its mineral value addition policy to ensure that the country’s mineral resources make a greater contribution to the national economy.

Mbibo said the visit to Finland was intended to enable Tanzanian experts to learn from the country’s experience and technologies used in mineral beneficiation, smelting and value addition.
He said GTK has been an important partner in advancing technical cooperation between Tanzania and Finland in the mining sector.
A representative of GTK said the visit was part of efforts to strengthen technical cooperation between Tanzania and Finland, particularly in research, technology and the application of sustainable approaches across the mineral value chain.
During the visit, the Tanzanian delegation also had an opportunity to learn about Finland’s experience in mineral beneficiation and smelting, including technologies used in processing minerals such as nickel and copper.
The experts also learned about measures taken to ensure that mineral processing activities are carried out efficiently while adhering to environmental protection standards and promoting the use of sustainable technologies.
The strategic visit brought together experts from the Ministry of Minerals and various institutions, including the Geological Survey of Tanzania (GST), Mining Commission, Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO), Tanzania Chamber of Minerals and Energy, and the National Environment Management Council (NEMC).
The completion of the visit is expected to enhance the capacity of Tanzanian experts in modern mineral processing and value addition technologies, while strengthening government efforts to ensure that Tanzania derives greater economic benefits from its mineral resources.
