Tanzania eyes a significant entry into helium value chain with a global firm

DODOMA: TANZANIA is expected to make a significant entry into the global helium value chain following a landmark partnership process with Helium One Global, with State Participation Agreements scheduled to be signed on May 2, 2026.
According to information from the Ministry of Minerals, the official signing ceremony of State participation agreements for the development and extraction of helium gas between Tanzania and Helium One Global Limited to be implemented through a joint venture company, Songwe Helium Limited will pave the way for the development of the Southern Rukwa Helium Project, one of the most promising helium ventures in Africa.
Additionally, the ministry said that once finalised, the deal will strengthen resource governance, expand the country’s strategic mineral portfolio, and accelerate industrial and technological development.

The ministry also stated that the project comes at a time when global demand for helium continues to rise, driven by its critical use in medical services, aerospace technology and advanced industrial applications.

“With rising global demand for helium across medical, aerospace, and high-tech industries, Tanzania is not just participating, it is positioning itself as a future supplier of strategic importance,” the ministry stated.
The ministry also noted that with the planned investment, Tanzania is positioning itself not just as a participant, but as a potential strategic supplier in the fast-growing global helium market.
“These historic steps by the government mark a new era of exceptional growth for the mining sector as Tanzania continues to ensure that citizens benefit fully from their resources and investment in the mining sector becomes inclusive and secure,” the ministry said.
The ministry added; “These efforts further promote Tanzania internationally as a globally competitive and investor-friendly hub of rare resources and opportunities.”
