Tanzania, DRC sign MoU to modernize Kalemie, Moba ports for improved trade

DODOMA: THE government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to upgrade the International Port of Kalemie and Moba port in order to modernize port operations and facilitate cargo transport between DRC and Tanzania.

The co-operation between the two countries was revealed in the August House on Thursday by Deputy Minister for Transport, Eng Godfrey Kasekenya when responding to a question by Momba Member of Parliament, Kondesta Sichalwe (CCM).

During her question, the legislator asked if there were any plans to improve the Kalemie port and if DRC operate on another port apart from Kalemie.

In response, the deputy minister said that already the MoU between the two countries had been signed to upgrade the Kalemie and Moba ports as well as the construction of the Kasambondo dry port.

“In the partnership, we have agreed to also upgrade railway infrastructures available in DRC,’’ said Eng Kasekenya.
According to the deputy minister, the MoU was signed between the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) on May 31, 2024, and that the consultant for the project had already been handed the site.

Kalemie, is a town, southeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is a port on the west bank of Lake Tanganyika where the Lukuga River exits.
