Tanzania calls for reforms at UN Security Council to reflect today’s global political landscape

NAIROBI: THE Tanzanian government has called for reforms to the United Nations Security Council to reflect the realities of today’s global political landscape, while emphasizing that it will remain at the forefront in advocating for broader representation, greater transparency, and increased accountability within the body.
The remarks were made by Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation responsible for East African Affairs, James Millya, during the Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on United Nations Security Council Reform held on the sidelines of the ongoing Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, Kenya.
The meeting was co-chaired by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot and Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Musalia Mudavadi.
During the discussions, Millya recalled the position previously expressed by former Vice President Dr Philip Mpango during the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, where he stressed that the world has changed significantly over the past eight decades since the establishment of the United Nations, making reforms that reflect the realities of the 21st century unavoidable.

A key issue raised during the discussions was the underrepresentation of Africa within the UN Security Council, despite the continent accounting for more than a quarter of the organization’s member states and being central to many of the issues debated at the global level.
Participants also emphasized that the reform agenda should not be limited to the Security Council alone, but should extend to other international financial institutions such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), in order to create a more inclusive global governance system.
