Tanzania, Australia agree to deepen bilateral ties in trade, investment, mining

DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA and Australia are seeking to deepen bilateral cooperation in trade, investment and the mining sector as the two countries move to expand economic and diplomatic relations.

The commitment emerged during talks between Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Dr Ngwaru Maghembe, and Australia’s Acting High Commissioner to Tanzania, Andrew Barnes, at the ministry’s sub-office in Dar es Salaam.

The two leaders discussions centred on strengthening cooperation in trade, investment, energy, mining and training for artisanal and small-scale miners, areas both sides identified as key drivers of future collaboration.

Dr Maghembe welcomed Mr Barnes to his new assignment, saying the government would extend the necessary support to enable him to effectively discharge his diplomatic duties and further strengthen the long-standing friendship between the two countries.

He also commended the outgoing Australian High Commissioner for his contribution to enhancing bilateral relations during his tenure.

Highlighting the growing economic partnership, Dr Maghembe cited the more than 510m US dollars Mahenge Graphite Project, being implemented through a partnership between Black Rock Mining and the Government of Tanzania, as a clear indication of the vast opportunities for expanding investment and economic cooperation between the two countries.

The meeting underscored the shared commitment of Tanzania and Australia to broadening collaboration in strategic sectors that support economic growth and sustainable development.
