Tanesco receives mega transformer for Chalinze substation project

THE Tanzania Electrical Supply Company (TANESCO) has received one of the six big transformers with the capacity of 250 megawatts for the ongoing 128bn/- worth project of Chalinze Substation in Bagamoyo District of Coast region.

Out of the six transformers, four of them are step-down transformers, which will be receiving 400 kilovolts of electricity transported from the Julius Nyerere Hydro Power Project (JNHPP) and reduce it to 220 kilovolts, while other two transformers will step down the voltage from 220 kilovolts to reach 132 kilovolts.

Speaking at the project site early this week after receiving the transformers, Coast Regional Commissioner (RC), Mr Abubakari Kunenge, said that the Chalinze project that is fully funded by the government has reached 53.13 per cent and is expected to be completed by July 30th this year, whereby the centre will be able to transport 800 megawatts to the National Grid.

“Construction activities are going on well. Today we have received one of the six big transformers, which will be installed here along with other two reactors. All equipment have been received at the Dar es Salaam Port. It is our expectations that the substation will be able to transmit 800 megawatts to the existing electrical infrastructures by July 30th as planned,” he said.

He went on to say that, JNHPP will help in providing reliable electricity in the country and especially for Coast Region which will be useful in developing growth of industries in the region. He said at the moment the region has over 1,400 industries whereby 97 of them are big.

“Industries owners need to be assured of realible electricity which will enable them conduct their production activities with no worries.  I want to use this opportunity to thank the government under President Samia Suluhu Hassan for working around the clock to ensure that these power projects are accomplished,” he added.

TANESCO Projects Manager, Engineer Didas Lyamuya, called for investors to be ready to build more industries in Coast region, pointing out that completion of the substation will ensure reliable electricity, not only in the region but also in regions of Tanga, Arusha, Dodoma and Dar es Salaam.

“This will be a substation hub of which power from different generation plants, including JNHPP and other centres of Kinyerezi, Kihansi, Tegeta, Songas and Ubungo will first be transmitted here before being transported to different areas.

“Before that, our power lines were working separately.  Completion of this substation will reduce operation costs and at the same time, ensure reliable electricity,” he explained.

The construction project started in year 2021 is being carried out by contractor– TBEA Company from China and is supervised by TANESCO.
