Tanesco connects power to 5,276,679 customers
DODOMA: THE government has vowed to speed up its pace of distributing and connecting power to new customers across the country.
Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Dunstan Kitandula, expressed the commitment in Parliament yesterday when responding to the question posed by CCM Bahi legislator Keneth Nollo, on behalf of the Minister for Energy.
In his question, Mr Nollo questioned the government on the possibility of increasing the pace of distributing and connecting power to customers in the country.
In his response, the deputy minister said the government continues with various programmes focusing on distributing power to rural areas.
Speaking on the achievements recorded so far, he said, the government had, by January this year, managed to connect power to all 12,318 villages in the country and 33, 657 hamlets out of the total 64,359 sub-villages.
He said due to the high speed at which the government, through Tanesco and Rural Energy Agency (REA), avails electricity to rural areas, a total of 5,276,679 customers were connected to electricity by December 2024, up from 4,689,024 customers in January 2024.

Speaking in Parliament recently, Deputy Minister for Energy Judith Kapinga said the remaining 30,702 hamlets will receive power through an ongoing implementation of electricity densification programme.
According to Ms Kapinga, the government has already crafted a programme meant to supply power to 20,000 hamlets, whose implementation started in 2023/2024 financial year.
She said the programme will be implemented between five and ten years. According to the deputy minister, the programme, in this preliminary stage, covers a total of 4,020 hamlets, with some projects going on.
During the Africa Heads of State Energy Summit, at the Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre (JNICC) in Dar es Salaam late month President Samia Suluhu Hassan outlined four key areas in which Tanzania’s focus lies for the implementation of the National Energy Compact.
The Head of State said the initiative aims to accelerate electricity access in the country, targeting 75 per cent coverage by 2030.
