SUA trains students for AFCON roles

MOROGORO: SOKOINE University of Agriculture (SUA) is preparing its Tourism Management students to take advantage of employment and business opportunities expected during the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The university’s College of Forestry, Wildlife and Tourism says it is equipping students with practical skills to meet the expected demand for hospitality, catering, event management and tourism services during the continental tournament.

Dean of the College, Professor Agnes Sirima, said the institution is developing strategies to ensure its students are ready to benefit from the influx of visitors expected during AFCON 2027.

“We are preparing ourselves to take advantage of the many opportunities that will come with the large number of visitors, as many companies will be looking for skilled professionals to provide quality services,” said Sirima.

She said the college plans to deploy Tourism Management students with skills in hospitality, traditional food preparation, beverage services and catering to support businesses during the tournament.

The college is also exploring ways to involve students studying event management in organising and managing activities linked to AFCON. Professor Sirima said the tournament would also provide an opportunity for graduates who have established tourism businesses to promote their services while showcasing Tanzania to international visitors.

“AFCON 2027 will provide a platform for our students and graduates to demonstrate their skills, promote their businesses and showcase Tanzania’s tourism potential,” she said.

She added that the college continues to equip students with practical skills that enable them to become self-employed and contribute to the country’s tourism industry. Tourism Management graduates from the college work as tour guides, hospitality professionals and entrepreneurs, while others establish their own tourism companies.
