Stop using children with disabilities as income sources -DC

PARENTS and guardians have been urged to refrain from using children with disabilities as means of earning income for business startup.

The call was made on Thursday by Kariakoo Division Secretary, Christina Kalekezi, when representing Ilala District Commissioner Ng’wilabuzu Ludigija, in an event to receive 35 wheelchairs for children with disabilities donated by the Hope for Young Girls Institute.

“Let’s get rid of the behavious of using  these children for begging  deny  their fundamental right  particularly to provision to basic needs… you should learn how to live with these children  because everyone has  his blessings from God ,” stressed Kalekezi.

Kalekezi also expressed gratitude to Hope for Young Girls Institute for caring the disabled children, because doing so will relieve the stress on parents who are already struggling to care of  them.

In her speech, Kalekezi said that parents who take care of children with disabilities are experiencing economic hardship   because they spend a lot of time taking care of the children instead of doing production activities.

These wheelchairs will easy movement of the children and help parents to get time for doing income generating   activities.

For her part, Hope for Young Girls Executive Director Salama Kikudo, thanked all the stakeholders who contributed their resources for purchasing the wheelchairs.

He appealed to the government to help the children to get health insurance especially those with various health challenges.

For her part, Redemphta Matindi, Director of Nursing Services, Muhimbili, said that the donation will help the children a lot especially in movement and mingle with other children.

For his part, one of the beneficiaries of the donation Pili Sagala, a resident of Gongolamboto in the city, said that   the donation is a huge support to parents with children with disabilities.

“My child was born with disability seven years ago, since  then he has  not been able to  either sit or walk,” he said.

Earlier, Hope for Young Girls Programs and Partnership Manager Janet John said the wheelchairs have been purchased through the fund raised during the hospitality campaign aimed at helping various needs in the community.

The donation has been made possible thrpugh collaboration with various stakeholders, including Al Muntazir School, Muhimbili National Hospital, Air Tanzania, Coca-Cola, NCBA, Efm Radio, and others.

The hospitality campaign started officially in 2017, and it has succeeded to provide various supports to the community such as   provision of medical equipment at Mkata Tanga Health Center, school and business equipment to Kisarawe and Mkuranga districts, providing food to orphans, among others.
