Stars take on Senegal today

ARUSHA: TAIFA Stars return to action today as they face off against Senegal in their second fixture of the Pre CHAN Tournament, taking place at the Karatu Stadium in Arusha.

This match comes on the heels of Taifa Stars’ narrow but spirited 1–0 victory over Uganda earlier this week at the same venue. The lone goal came from Iddi Suleiman in the first half, sealing a hard fought win for the hosts.

With eyes now firmly on Senegal, Taifa Stars striker Nasor Saadun has admitted that today’s encounter will pose a significant challenge for the side.

“Senegal are a strong team with good structure and technical players, so we expect a tough match but these kinds of tests are exactly what we need as we gear up for CHAN,” Saadun said.

The three-nation warm-up tournament – featuring Tanzania, Uganda and Senegal – has been praised by the national team as an ideal platform for assessing form and fine-tuning tactics ahead of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), which kicks off this Saturday, August 2nd.

Taifa Stars recently returned from a preparatory camp in Egypt, which Saadun believes has given the team the edge in both physical and tactical readiness.

“The camp in Egypt was fruitful. The boys are in great shape and the mood is very positive. We are confident these preparations will help us perform well and make the nation proud,” said the forward, who also called on Tanzanians to show their support.

“We need everyone behind us. The support from fans really lifts the team, especially as we open our CHAN campaign against Burkina Faso at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium on Saturday.”

Meanwhile, excitement continues to build in Dar es Salaam and across the country as the countdown to CHAN enters its final days. Various local initiatives and decorations have sprung up in support of Taifa Stars, painting the city in the team’s colours.

Temeke District Commissioner Sixtus Mapunda has encouraged residents of Dar es Salaam to seize the opportunities presented by the continental tournament, particularly in the areas of hospitality and accommodation.

“This tournament brings thousands of visitors. Whether you run a hotel, a restaurant, or any form of hospitality business, ensure your services reflect the value and spirit of this competition,” said Mapunda. “Let us make CHAN a success for both football and economic growth.”
