STAMICO donates 40m/- for a campaign to promote the clean cooking energy in Geita

GEITA: THE State Mining Corporation (STAMICO) has provided 40m/-  in funding to alternative charcoal producers in Geita Region as part of efforts to promote the use of clean cooking energy in Tanzania.

The Chairperson of the Women and Samia Foundation in Geita, Adelina Kabakama, made the announcement in the presence of leaders of the 2026 National Uhuru Torch Race, saying the funding would enable the foundation to work with STAMICO in the production and distribution of clean-energy charcoal.

Kabakama said the initiative was intended to support the implementation of the National Clean Cooking Energy Strategy 2024–2034, which aims to ensure that 80 per cent of Tanzanians use clean cooking energy by 2034.

She said the alternative charcoal was beneficial to households because it was more affordable, while also helping protect the environment by reducing reliance on firewood and cutting down trees for charcoal production.

“This project benefits citizens because the cost of this charcoal is affordable. It is also environmentally friendly because it reduces the use of firewood and the cutting down of trees for charcoal production,” Kabakama said.

She said the foundation currently distributes an average of three tonnes of the alternative charcoal per month, with plans to increase production and supply various public institutions as demand grows.

“At present, we distribute an average of three tonnes per month, and we intend to supply various public institutions depending on the increase in demand,” she said.

According to Kabakama, STAMICO plans to establish an alternative charcoal processing plant in Geita Region to increase production, bring services closer to consumers and make clean cooking energy more accessible to Tanzanians.

Commenting on the initiative, the 2026 National Uhuru Torch Race leader, Wazo Michael Mwang’oda, said the use of clean cooking energy should be supported by the entire community because of its contribution to protecting human health and the environment.

He said promoting clean cooking energy was an important step towards reducing the environmental pollution associated with conventional energy sources and improving the well-being of citizens.
