Simba, Mashujaa set for tight Premier League clash

DAR ES SALAAM: TITLE-CHASING Simba SC face a stern test of their championship credentials today when they face a resilient Mashujaa FC side in a Mainland Premier League fixture at Lake Tanganyika Stadium.
The Msimbazi giants, currently second in the Mainland Premier League, are looking to narrow a five-point gap behind leaders Young Africans (Yanga). Simba have 49 points from 22 matches, while Yanga lead with 54 points having played one game more.
While Simba have dominated recent head-tohead meetings, their opponents have lost only once in their last six matches, setting the stage for a highstake encounter in Kigoma.
Simba assistant coach Selemani Matola said the squad is braced for a physical encounter against a mid-table side that has become increasingly difficult to beat at home.
“Our games against Mashujaa are never easy. They are always tough and physical, but we are well prepared to grab important points,” Matola told reporters ahead of the game scheduled to kick-of at 4:15pm. Matola added that the return of several key players from injury would bolster his options as the club enters a critical phase of the title race.
Mashujaa, currently ninth with 26 points, have lost only once in their last six matches.
Head coach Jamhuri Kihwelo said his team respects but would not be intimidated by Simba’s stature. He said they are prepared to compete strongly at home.
“We respect Simba because they are among the biggest teams in the country, but we are also prepared and ready to fight for victory,” he said.
While Simba have won the last three head-to-head meetings—including a 2-0 victory in January—recent form suggests a closer contest. Mashujaa have recorded four draws in their last five outings, proving to be one of the league’s most stubborn defensive units.
Simba remain the league’s most disciplined side at the back, conceding just 14 goals this season. However, they face a Mashujaa side that has shown a renewed resilience, losing only once in their last six league appearances.
