Simba, Mashujaa face big stakes

DAR ES SALAAM: SIMBA Head Coach Steve Barker and Mashujaa counterpart Salum Mayanga struck a tone of mutual respect but contrasting ambitions on the eve of their Tanzania Mainland Premier League clash. Both sides prepared for a contest expected to be defined by discipline, tactics and fine margins at Major General Isamuhyo Stadium today.

Speaking during a pre-match interview in Dar es Salaam, Barker warned his players against complacency, insisting that league positions and reputations count for little in a competition he described as fiercely competitive.

“The league is very competitive, and Mashujaa are a well-coached team with quality players, so this is not a match we can take lightly,” said Barker, underlining the need for focus despite Simba’s status as one of the country’s football heavyweights.

While acknowledging the threat posed by Mashujaa, the Simba tactician made it clear that his primary concern lies within his own camp.

“Respecting the opponent is important, but the focus is on us, on playing to our full potential and achieving our objectives as a team,” he said.

Barker expressed confidence in the progress his squad has made, noting visible improvement across all departments following intensive training sessions.

“The squad has grown and improved, and the hard work we are putting in during training now has to be reflected on the pitch,” he added.

With Simba juggling domestic and CAF Champions League commitments, Barker highlighted the importance of squad management over the demanding months ahead.

He confirmed that defender Shomari Kapombe and midfielder Mohammed Bajaber remain doubtful due to minor injuries, though the rest of the squad is in good condition.

“As Simba, it is our responsibility at home to perform at the highest level, collect maximum points, and continue to show our identity and progression,” Barker stressed.

On the opposite bench, Mashujaa’s Mayanga acknowledged Simba’s quality but insisted his side will not be overawed.

“Simba are a strong team with a good balance of foreign and local players, especially in midfield and attack,” said Mayanga.

“We respect them, but we do not fear them.” Mayanga expects a tactical battle and revealed his team has prepared carefully after analysing Simba’s recent domestic and international outings.

Despite missing a central defender, he remains confident in his squad’s depth and ability to respond after costly mistakes in their previous match.

In the league standings, Simba sit sixth with 13 points from just six matches, while Mashujaa also have 13 points but from 10 games, setting the stage for a compelling encounter where momentum and precision may prove decisive.
