Simba final spot heroics, a feat befitting nation’s fete

DURBAN: HISTORIC achievement after 32-year hiatus: This is what describes Simba latest feat, by reaching the final of the CAF Confederation Cup, after bundling out stubborn South African side Stellenbosch on 1-0 aggregate victory.
In a pulsating return leg semifinal clash at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Sunday, the Reds withstood steaming pressure from the host, to force an away barren draw.
Simba went to South Africa with a narrow 1-0 cushion, registered at the New Amani Stadium in Zanzibar a week ago, meaning they progress to the final.
The achievement marks a historic return to the final for Simba, a feat not seen since 1993 when they reached the final of the then CAF Cup, but were defeated by Stella Abidjan 0-2 of Ivory Coast in the return leg at the then National Stadium, now Uhuru Stadium. Simba had forced an away barren draw in the first leg in Abidjan.
Following the latest achievement, Simba has demonstrated exceptional performance on the continental stage, which is a major accomplishment for Tanzanian football and this is why President Samia Suluhu Hassan has congratulated the giants for their impressive feat.
President Samia has always expressed her pride and admiration for the team’s hard work and determination, which have earned them a place in the final after a series of outstanding performances throughout the tournament.
Taking to Instagram to congratulate the team yesterday, President Samia wrote:
“Sincere congratulations to Simba Sports Club for their victory in CAF Confederation Cup and for making history by reaching the final. You have brought great honour to our country. I wish you all the best. You have my full support at all times.”

President Samia has significantly supported the team, providing transport to South Africa and accommodation.
She has also incentivized their performance, rewarding the team with 5m/- on each goal scored during the preliminary rounds, group stage, and quarterfinals.
In the semifinals, the reward increased to 20m/- per goal. This support has greatly motivated the team, fueling their pride in representing the nation.
Simba’s remarkable achievement marks another milestone in Tanzanian football, reinforcing the growing stature of the country’s clubs on the continental stage. The team’s performance has not only brought joy to their fans but has also united the nation in celebrating their success.
The Msimbazi reds success is a testament to the hard work, commitment, and team spirit of the players, coaching staff, and management. Their consistent performance throughout the tournament reflects their dedication to excellence, something worth celebrating and encouraging for the nation.
Simba latest feat is also an add on for what another counry’s giants Young Africans attained in 2023, when they reached the final but lost to USM Alger of Algeria on an away goal rule. Yanga lost 1-2 at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam but went ahead to win 1-0 away in Algiers, which was not enough for them to secure victory.
