DAR ES SALAAM: PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan paid a heartfelt tribute to the fallen artist Grace Mapunda who was laid to rest yesterday at Kinondoni Cemetery in Dar es Salaam.
Veteran actress, Grace Mapunda, known by her stage name Tesa, passed away on Saturday at Mwananyamala Hospital, where she had been receiving treatment for an illness.
In her tribute, the Head of State expressed deep condolences, reflecting on the profound impact Grace Mapunda had on the Tanzanian arts community.
President Samia noted, “I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Grace Mapunda, especially within the film industry.
“For over 20 years, Grace shared her incredible talent, captivating and educating millions of Tanzanians through her performances.
“May her soul rest in peace and may her family find strength and comfort during this difficult time.”
A heartfelt farewell
In a solemn gathering that echoed with grief and love, beloved Tanzanian actress Grace Mapunda was laid to rest yesterday at Kinondoni Cemetery in Dar es Salaam, a city that now mourns the loss of one of its shining stars.
Known affectionately as Tesa, Grace passed away on Saturday at Mwananyamala Hospital, leaving behind a legacy woven into the fabric of Tanzania’s film industry.
As her coffin arrived at her home in Sinza Vatican, the atmosphere was heavy with sorrow. Neighbours and relatives came to bid their final farewells, their hearts burdened with the weight of her absence.
Though her body lay in a closed coffin, it felt as though her spirit lingered, a vibrant smile captured in the memories of those who loved her. The once lively home now stood silent, enveloped in a profound sense of loss.
The funeral ceremony at Leaders Club became a sanctuary for grief, where hundreds gathered to honour Grace’s memory. The air was thick with emotion as Apostle Boniface Mwamposa led a poignant service, reminding attendees of the transient nature of life with reflections from the story of the rich man and Lazarus is a parable told by Jesus in the Gospel of Luke.
After the apostle’s remarks, then stood at the podium, the Deputy Minister for Culture, Arts and Sports Hamis Mwinjuma who addressed the crowd, his voice heavy with emotion. “It’s a sad moment, especially for the children who have lost a mother,” he said, highlighting the void left in the lives of those who depended on her nurturing spirit.
He further reminder the Holy teachings from the Book of Job, “A man born of a woman has but a few days,” he said, encapsulating the fragility of existence.
Furthermore, the deputy minister emphasised the government’s commitment to enhancing the status of artists in the country. He highlighted the establishment of an arts and cultural fund to support artists in their creative endeavours.
Additionally, plans are underway to facilitate artists’ participation in social security funds, which would offer financial protection and benefits to artists and their families.
“We are in discussions with social security funds to explore how we can provide financial protection and benefits for artists and their families, both during their careers and in times of need,” he stated.
Among the mourners were her fellow artists from the popular television series ‘Huba’, who escorted her coffin with reverence, a symbol of the camaraderie and love they shared.
Among the leading actors who expressed their condolences was Jacob Steven, known as JB. He shared, “Tanzania has lost one of its finest actors. I thank God for the gift of your life. I will miss your humour, your brilliant performances and your unmistakable voice. Rest in peace, my friend. It was both an honour and a privilege to have the opportunity to perform alongside you, Grace Mapunda.”
Another artist spoke of Grace’s indomitable spirit was Hashim Kambi, reflecting on how her presence had uplifted the film industry, particularly for women. “The status quo has fallen,” he lamented, calling upon young artists to learn from her goodness—her discipline, respect and creativity.

Rammy Galis, who portrayed Tesa’s son in ‘Huba’, shared his heartache feelings on Instagram. “To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return,” he wrote a poignant reminder of faith amidst sorrow. He recalled the pain of watching her suffer, expressing his gratitude for the lessons she had imparted: “Your gap is very big in the life of my industry. Rest in Peace, Mama.”
As friends and colleagues took turns to share their memories, tears flowed freely. Mrisho Zimbwe, known as Tito, remembered Grace as a sister and confidant. “She was loving and caring, always reaching out to help others,” he reflected, his voice trembling. “I have lost a friend indeed, a friend and a mother.”
