Samatta makes history with Le Havre AC

FRANCE: A NEW chapter in Tanzanian football has begun, with national team – Taifa Stars Captain Mbwana Samatta officially signing a one-year deal with Le Havre AC, becoming the first Tanzanian player in history to join France’s Ligue 1, a landmark achievement for both player and country.

The historic signing was confirmed by Le Havre, affectionately known as Les Ciel et Marine (The Sky-and-Navy), in what has been a very active summer transfer window for the club.

After weeks of speculation, the French side finally put pen to paper with the Taifa Stars skipper, who will wear the number 70 shirt next season. At 32 years old, Samatta brings a wealth of experience, leadership and goal-scoring pedigree to Le Havre’s frontline.

Known for his clinical finishing and being equally dangerous with both feet, the striker fondly nicknamed “Samagoal”, first rose to prominence with African giants TP Mazembe, where he won four league titles in DR Congo and lifted the CAF Champions League trophy in 2015.

That same year, he claimed the Golden Boot and was named African Player of the Year (based in Africa), a rare double accolade. Samatta’s talents soon earned him a move to Europe.

He joined Belgian side Genk, where he clinched the Belgian Pro League title and became a fan favourite.

His European journey continued with stints at Aston Villa (Premier League), Fenerbahçe (Turkey), Royal Antwerp (Belgium) and PAOK Thessaloniki (Greece) where he recently helped the club secure the 2024 Greek Super League title.
