HARARE, ZANZIBAR: THE Southern African Development Community (SADC) has commended the Angola government for taking initiatives to search for the lasting peace in DR Congo and the Great Lakes region in general.
SADC Chairman, Dr Emmerson Mnangagwa expressed the appreciation while closing the SADC Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government held this week in Harare, Zimbabwe.
Zanzibar President Dr Hussein Mwinyi represented President Samia Suluhu Hassan at the summit.
Mnangagwa, who is the President of Zimbabwe, also praised President Felix Tshekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for working closely with his Angolan counterpart, Mr Joao Lorenco in search for peace in the area.
The summit received an update on the progress of the SADC Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (SAMIDRC).

The SADC region deployed the SAMIDRC in December last year, on a one-year mandate as a regional response, to address the security situation in the DRC and restore peace, security and stability to pave the way for sustainable development.
“We appreciate the continuing efforts in conflict resolution to end DRC/Rwanda hostility,” SADC Chair Mnangagwa said when closing the meeting on Thursday, at the Parliament of Zimbabwe.
In addition, he expressed his appreciation for the contribution made by the countries of Tanzania and Malawi to restore peace and security in Democratic Republic of Congo.
President Mnangagwa said SADC will continue with various strategies to ensure that all the countries in the region have lasting peace.
“I urge leaders in the region to promote democracy and the well-being of their people.”
President Mwinyi, who was accompanied by his wife Mama Mariam Mwinyi and other senior officers from Tanzania, received praise from the Attorney General of Zimbabwe, Mrs Virginia Mabhiza for representing Dr Samia well at the meeting.
At the Zimbabwe’s Robert Mugabe International Airport, President Mwinyi and his team were seen-off by Tanzania Ambassador to Zimbabwe Simon Nyakoro Sirro.
