SADC member states urged to stay committed to regional goals
DAR ES SALAAM: THE SOUTHERN Africa Development Community (SADC) member states have been urged to continue implementing decisions made at various meetings, particularly those requiring direct action from member states to achieve sustainable regional development goals.
The call was made by the Deputy Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Said Shaibu Mussa as he led the Tanzanian delegation at the meeting of SADC Standing Committee of Senior Officials which concluded yesterday in Harare, Zimbabwe.
The meeting was held as part of preparations for the upcoming Ordinary Meeting of the SADC Council of Ministers on March 12, 2025, reviewed several key reports presented by the Key Expert Committee.
The discussions included assessments on the implementation of decisions from previous meetings, including those from the Council of Ministers and the Summit of Heads of State and Government, as well as a report on the budget plan for the 2025/2026 financial year.
Moreover, the meeting delved into the review of various policies and protocols within the SADC community, with particular focus on the progress of the Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan (RISDP) 2020-2030, especially in its four key priority areas and cross-cutting issues.
Ambassador Mussa stressed the critical importance of member states investing in the assessment and monitoring of the effective implementation of these decisions to ensure continued progress within the region.

In his opening remarks, Chairperson and Permanent Secretary for Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Ambassador Albert Chimbindi urged participants to engage deeply in discussions regarding the reports.
He expressed satisfaction with the enthusiasm shown by member states in advancing the SADC Community’s goals of economic development, peace and security.
Meanwhile, SADC convened a virtual Extraordinary Summit of the Heads of State and Government of the Organ Troika on Thursday to address the escalating security situation in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The summit was chaired by President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who is also the Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation.
The meeting was attended by President of Malawi and incoming Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, Dr Lazarus Chakwera, President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia, President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa, one of the troop contributing countries to the SADC Mission in the DRC (SAMIDRC) and President Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The Extraordinary Summit reviewed the latest updates on the security situation in eastern DRC and discussed the Defence Sub-Committee’s Report on the Review of the SAMIDRC Mandate.
