Royals, Reel Dream emerge as 2026 WBDL threats

DAR ES SALAAM: WITH the 2026 Basketball Dar es Salaam League (BDL) regular season nearing its decisive stage, Tausi Royals and Reel Dream have emerged as two of the women’s competition’s biggest threats, challenging the established order.

The two relatively new sides have made a strong impression through a series of impressive results, raising the pressure on established teams such as JKT Stars, Jeshi Stars and defending champions DB Lioness as the race for playoff places intensifies.

Tausi Royals, founded just three years ago, have been particularly impressive. They have recorded victories over several established sides, including JKT Stars (58-42), Vijana Queens (66- 59), defending champions DB Lioness (66-39), DB Troncatti (81-64) and Polisi Stars (65-54).

Their impressive run also includes a 58-48 victory over Reel Dream, another team that has quickly established itself as a serious contender this season. Tausi Royals head coach Daudi Maiga said the team’s objective from the outset had been to win the WBDL title.

“My players know that our target is to become champions. I am grateful that, after setting that objective, the players have continued to work hard throughout,” Maiga said.

Royals boast a strong squad featuring Noela Renatus, Judith Pantaleo, Tumwagile Mwaipola, Divine Irakoze, Aaliyah Havyarimana, Diana Mwendi, Mahewa Matewa, Juliana Mashaka and team captain Tumaini Ndossi.

Reel Dream, founded last year, have also shown they can compete with the league’s established sides. They defeated Vijana Queens 81-72 and DB Lioness 72-44 before narrowly losing 58-55 to Tausi Royals.

They later bounced back with a 63-52 victory over Jeshi Stars. Reflecting on the defeat to Reel Dream, Jeshi Stars star Ummul-Kulthum said it was simply not their day, despite their efforts to stay in the contest until the final whistle.

Reel Dream player Ratifa Mwembe described the victory over Jeshi Stars as an important step in their bid to secure a favourable playoff position. She said the team must win its remaining matches to improve its chances of finishing high in the standings.

Mwembe attributed the victory to the players’ ability to follow the coach’s instructions and their improved defensive effort. She also credited BetPawa’s Locker Room Bonus for providing an additional source of motivation and morale for the players to perform at their best on court.

Royals lead women’s race

Tausi Royals have been equally dominant in the women’s standings, sitting at the top with a perfect record of 13 wins from 13 games for 26 points in the league organised by Basketball Dar es Salaam Association (BD).

Vijana Queens and DB Troncatti are tied on 24 points, although Vijana Queens have played 14 matches compared with 13 for DB Troncatti.

Reel Dream are fourth with 22 points from 12 games and remain firmly in contention for a strong playoff position in the field of 17 women’s battle. Ukonga Queens occupy fifth place with 21 points, followed by Jeshi Stars on 20. JKT Stars and Polisi Stars have 19 points each, the same tally collected by Pazi Queens and DB Lioness.

The middle and lower sections of the table remain highly competitive, with Kigamboni Queens and Prisons Queens both on 18 points. Twalipo Queens have 16 points, while City Queens have 15. UDSM Queens are next on 14 points, followed by Mgulani Queens and Kurasini Divas, who have 12 points each.

With the regular season entering its decisive phase, every remaining fixture carries increasing importance as teams battle either to secure playoff qualification or improve their seeding ahead of the knockout stage.

The unbeaten records of Tausi Royals in the women’s competition and Dar City in the men’s category have given both sides a significant advantage, but the congested standings behind them suggest the battle for playoff places could go down to the final matches.

Dar City maintain men’s dominance

In the BDL men’s category, defending champions Dar City continue to set the pace, maintaining a perfect record after winning all 13 matches for 26 points. Stein Warriors are second with 23 points from 12 games after recording 11 wins and one defeat, while Pazi are third on 22 points from 12 matches, having won 10 and lost two.

Vijana occupies fourth place with 20 points from 12 games, followed by Savio, Mlimani BC and ABC, who have also collected 20 points, although they differ in matches played and points difference.

The battle for the remaining playoff places is particularly tight, with UDSM Outsiders, JKT and Ukonga Kings all on 19 points. Veins BC are 11th with 15 points, while DB Oratory, Chui and Magone BC have 14 points each.

At the bottom of the table, Srelio have managed just one victory from 13 matches for 14 points, while Mchenga BS remains the only men’s team yet to register a win, sitting 16th with 12 points from 12 games.

The emergence of Tausi Royals and Reel Dream has added another dimension to an increasingly competitive WBDL campaign, particularly in the women’s category where established clubs now face a serious challenge from the league’s new generation.
