REA to set up mini fuel stations in rural areas

DAR ES SALAAM: THE government, through the Rural Energy Agency (REA), is implementing a programme to facilitate the construction and operation of new, low-cost mini fuel stations (for petrol and diesel) in rural areas to eliminate the risks associated with unsafe fuel distribution methods.
This was revealed on Thursday, during the 49th Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (Sabasaba), at the agency’s exhibition pavilion by REA Survey Officer, Hussein Shamdas.
“In ensuring access to quality and safe energy in rural areas, REA has continued to fulfil its responsibilities by planning and implementing various projects, including this initiative to support the construction and operation of mini fuel stations in rural areas,” said Shamdas.
He highlighted some of the challenges faced by rural residents due to the absence of petrol and diesel stations in their areas, including the high cost of accessing the products, which often differs from the government recommended prices.
In addition to the cost, Shamdas noted that fuel shortages sometimes occur in rural areas due to the long distances from fuel stations and the high cost of transportation.
“Currently, the sale and storage of petrol and diesel in rural areas is neither clean nor safe, as many people store fuel in barrels and plastic containers inside their homes, which is dangerous and could cause explosions, endangering lives. It is also unsafe for motor vehicles that use these products,” said Shamdas.
He mentioned other harmful effects, including health risks caused by inhaling unsafe air due to indoor fuel storage, environmental damage resulting from fuel spills in various areas and government revenue losses, as many rural fuel vendors do not pay taxes and government levies.
“Recognising these risks and in line with the goals of the 2015 National Energy Policy, it is the agency’s responsibility to ensure reliable and affordable energy access across all regions of the country through safe means,” he said.
Shamdas called on citizens across Mainland Tanzania to take advantage of the opportunity to apply for loans to construct and operate fuel stations. He explained that applicants are required to fill out a special form, after which further steps will follow.
