DAR ES SALAAM : THE public is strongly encouraged to seek immediate diagnosis and treatment for individuals experiencing memory loss, as early detection of the underlying cause significantly improves the chances of effective management and full recovery.
The Neurologist at Muhimbili National Hospital, Dr Brighton Mushengezi told reporters recently regarding the challenge of memory loss among the people. He said memory loss can affect people of all ages, not just the elderly.
“Memory loss can be triggered by various factors, including ageing, nutritional deficiencies such as a lack of vitamin B12, conditions like strokes and certain sexually transmitted infections, including HIV and syphilis,” explained Dr Mushengezi.
He added that hormonal imbalances, particularly issues with thyroid hormones, can contribute to memory loss. “Identifying the cause early through a proper diagnosis allows for timely treatment, which is why we stress the importance of seeking medical help as soon as possible,” he said.
Dr Mushengezi further noted that memory loss is a significant global issue, affecting around 55 million people worldwide. According to 2023 World Health Organisation (WHO) statistics, approximately 10,000 new cases are reported each year.
At Muhimbili National Hospital-Mloganzila, the Neurology Clinic offers diagnosis and treatment for memory loss diseases.
The World Health Organisation defines memory loss diseases, or dementia, as a range of conditions that impair memory, thinking and the ability to perform everyday tasks.
Dementia is currently the seventh leading cause of death and one of the primary causes of disability and dependency among older adults globally.
Dementia not only has significant physical, psychological and social impacts on those affected, but it also places considerable emotional and economic burdens on families and communities.
A lack of awareness and understanding of dementia often leads to stigmatisation, as well as barriers to diagnosis and care.
