Public centres in Geita to receive free Wi-Fi service
GEITA: THE government, through the Universal Communications Service Access Fund (UCSAF), has begun implementing a project to offer free internet services (Wi-Fi) in public centres, including markets and health facilities, in Geita Region.
UCSAF Lake Zone Manager Mr Fredy Kandonga said this while presenting a report on the implementation of communication projects in Geita Region during a Regional Consultative Council (RCC).
He said the targeted areas would be connected to internet services, allowing users to access free internet under an agreement with the service provider.
“We provide a subsidy for one year, after which we expect the responsible authority to continue providing the service,” Mr Kandonga said.
He said two locations were included in the project during the 2025/26 financial year namely; Ushirombo Market in Bukombe District and Geita District Hospital at Nzera.
He added that, during the 2026/27 financial year, UCSAF would continue implementing the project in Geita Region, targeting Chato District Hospital and Katoro Health Centre.
“The Ushirombo Market and Geita District Hospital projects are already at the procurement stage, while the Chato District Hospital and Katoro Health Centre projects are still at the initial stages,” he said.
He said that, as part of efforts to strengthen communication services during the four years of the Sixth-Phase government, the government had allocated funds for the construction of 758 communication towers in 688 wards.
He said that, in improving internet services over the same period, the government had upgraded 304 communication towers from 2G technology to either 3G or 4G.
“In Geita Region, the government, through UCSAF, allocated a subsidy of 2.2bn/- for the construction of 19 communication towers in 17 wards under the Digital Tanzania Project.
“As of December 31, 2025, all the towers in the 17 wards had been completed and were providing communication services,” Mr Kandonga stressed.
The RCC Chairperson and Bukombe District Commissioner, Eng Pasikasi Muragili, urged UCSAF to continue conducting research to identify and improve communication services in areas facing network challenges.
