PS orders institutes to collaborate on dairy research

ARUSHA: THE government has directed livestock research institutes to collaborate on research aimed at improving dairy cow production to meet local and international market standards.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, Prof Riziki Shemdoe issued the instructions to International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and the Tanzania Livestock Research Institute (TALIRI) during the recent visit to the Africa Asia Dairy Genetic Gain (AADGG) and Envirocow projects in Arusha Region.

“I instruct you to enhance collaboration in research to ensure our country produces more highquality dairy cows,” he stated.

The PS stressed the importance of leveraging technology to improve dairy cow productivity, boosting individual incomes and contributing to the nation’s economic growth.

Prof Shemdoe highlighted the ministry’s recognition of the importance of digital extension services and regular farmer visits, recommending that each farmer be visited at least once a month.

The PS noted that the government, through the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, has supported the AADGG project, helping farmers learn, adapt and boost productivity.

The PS noted that farmers have purchased high-quality cows from the AADGG project for breeding and participation in the ‘kopa ng’ombe lipa maziwa’ dairy cow loan initiative.

The Country Coordinator for the AADGG and EnviroCow projects, Dr Eliamoni Lyatuu emphasised the significant improvements in livestock farming brought about by the AADGG project. Dr Lyatuu highlighted that the initiative has provided farmers with improved breeding stock, advanced agricultural techniques and digital tools to boost productivity.

Dr Lyatuu added that the project has promoted sustainability in the livestock sector, benefiting both individual farmers and the wider economy.
