Police seize 103 motorcycles; detain 30 suspects in Mwanza for violating road safety laws
MWANZA: THE Regional Police Force here has seized 103 motorcycles and detained 30 suspects during a crackdown aimed at curbing violations of road safety laws, regulations, and procedures in Mwanza City.
Speaking yesterday at his office in Mwanza, Mwanza Regional Police Commander (DCP) Wilbrod Mutafungwa stated that the operation began on September 14 this year, following public complaints regarding motorcyclists who speed dangerously, use unauthorized high-intensity lights, modify exhaust systems to create excessive noise, and ride without registration plates.
“Of the 103 motorcycles seized, 70 were impounded for using high-intensity lights, 13 for modified exhaust systems, 10 for lacking registration plates, and five for the riders not having licenses; another five were seized for offenses involving failure to wear helmets and carrying multiple passengers,” he said.

DCP Mutafungwa stated that these actions violate road safety laws, regulations, and procedures under Section 13 of Chapter 168 (as revised in 2023).
He noted that the crackdown is ongoing and was initiated after citizens complained about the nuisance and fear caused by motorcyclists who violate road safety laws. Commander Mutafungwa instructed the Mwanza Regional Traffic Police Commander to ensure that all detained riders receive safety education and have illegal lights removed from their motorcycles, and to impose fines on those who had modified their exhaust systems.
