Police issue reminder on unregistered firearms

TANZANIA: THE Police Force has ordered people who own unregistered firearms to surrender them to the police stations across the country before the end of this month.

Police Force Spokesperson, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police (SACP) David Misime said in his statement that the order is a reminder to the government statement issued earlier last month which required all unregistered firearms to be surrendered to Police.

“The government statement gave people who owned unregistered firearms to surrender them from September 1 to October 31 this year and its just 26 days remained for the expiry of the deadline,” said SACP Misime.

He said that Police are aware of the people who own fire arms of their deceased relatives and they are known so the time remained is for them to fulfil the requirement.

SACP Misime said that for those who voluntarily surrendered the fire arms will not be disturbed.

He added, “when the grace period expires the police will embark on search of illegal firearms and those who will be caught will be taken to the court and punished to pay a fine of 10 m/- or 15 years imprisonment or both.”

SACP Misime added that if they will be found with illegal firearms it will be a problem for them and this will affect their routines.

He advised the public to obey the government order to taking the unregistered firearms to the police stations.
