Tanzania calls for stronger ties in minerals value-addition

ADDIS ABABA: TANZANIA has called for stronger regional cooperation and value addition in the mining sector, insisting that sustainable use of critical minerals is essential for Africa’s industrial future.

The message was delivered at a United Nations Economic Commission for Africa regional forum in Addis Ababa, where the country was represented by the Deputy Minister in the Ministry of Minerals, Steven Kiruswa.

Tanzania stressed that minerals such as lithium, cobalt and nickel are not just natural resources, but strategic assets driving electric mobility, renewable energy systems and the global shift towards decarbonisation.

The country underscored that Africa plays a central role in global clean energy supply chains, but warned that the continent must urgently prioritise value addition to create jobs and ensure inclusive economic growth.

Speaking at the forum, officials stressed that sustainability, transparency and accountability must guide all mining investments, while increased use of technology is key to improving productivity and reducing environmental impact.

Msafiri Mbibo noted that while the opportunities are significant, poor governance, environmental neglect and weak community inclusion could undermine long-term benefits.

The discussions concluded with a strong call for Africa to strengthen cooperation and partnerships, with a focus on transforming the continent from a raw material exporter into a competitive industrial hub within global value chains.
