DODOMA: DODOMA Regional Police Force has launched a new electronic registration system aimed at curbing the widespread theft of mobile phones and other electronic devices in the region.
The system, developed in collaboration with mobile phone technicians and electronics vendors, mandates the registration of all devices brought in for repair or sale.
Details to be recorded include the device model, the customer’s National ID (NIDA) number and the device’s serial or registration number.
Speaking shortly after a consultative meeting with key stakeholders, Dodoma Regional Police Commander (RPC), Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police (SACP) George Katabazi said the system will significantly enhance the ability to trace and identify the rightful owners of lost or stolen devices.
“Theft of mobile phones and laptops has reached alarming levels in Dodoma. We are taking firm action against this trend and this system is a key part of our strategy,” he said.
Commander Katabazi noted a recent case in which a suspect, identified as Jones Richard, was arrested in possession of 24 stolen mobile phones and 11 laptops.

“In just the past three months, more than 100 stolen phones have been reported to police. This shows the magnitude of the problem,” he added.
He explained that the initiative also targets criminals who attempt to erase data or reprogramme stolen devices by taking them to unsuspecting technicians.
Following the meeting, stakeholders agreed on a joint resolution to dismantle the criminal networks involved and to ensure that technicians adhere to professional and legal standards.
The police chief urged all technicians and vendors to avoid any dealings with stolen goods and to report suspicious devices brought in for servicing.
“Don’t let your business be used as a gateway for criminal activity,” he warned.
To strengthen enforcement, Commander Katabazi said the Cyber Crime Unit has been upgraded and he encouraged members of the public to report any related crimes without fear.
He also issued a strong warning against bribery in police dealings.
