Police arrest five for possessing govt trophies in Kagera Region

KAGERA: POLICE in Kagera Region have arrested five suspects including a Ugandan national for allegedly being in unlawful possession of government trophies.
Kagera Regional Police Commander Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police (SACP) Blasius Chatanda named the suspects as Fidelis Ikanga (35), a resident of Kagenyi Village in Kyerwa District, Giburiru Dauda (58) and George Malingumu (35), both residents of Missenyi District.
Others are Sulaiman Semukuye (45), a Ugandan national and Idephonce Korongo (58) a resident of Kyerwa District.
He explained that on 24 February, this year police were tipped by a Good Samaritan about the group and laid a trap that enabled them to arrest five suspects, who were found in possession of two rhino horns.
Police investigations are in progress to identify the group and the suspects will be arraigned in court when investigations are completed, he said.
Meanwhile, police are also investigating a recent incident in Kyerwa District, in which unknown people set on fire several properties including two vehicles, houses and a banana farm.

SACP Chatanda explained that on 22 February, this year, Francis Butoto (70), a resident of Kishanda Village, Kibare Ward, in Kyerwa District was killed by unknown people and his decaying body was later found dumped in a pit latrine.
“Following the incident, a mob organised themselves and set on fire two vehicles – a Toyota premio with registration number T 469 AYG and a mini canter with registration number T 816 DDY, ten houses and several hectares of banana farms properties of Bitakalamile Filkon.
The Regional police chief further said four suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident and will be arraigned to court upon completion of investigations.
He identified them as Flora Bitakalamile (42), who is the wife of the late Butoto and George Bitaka (52), Detrick George (19) and Christopher Bitakalamile (30), all residents of Kishanda Village, in Kyerwa District.
