PM orders the Search and Rescue Coordination Centre to operate 24 hours

MWANZA: PRME Minister Mwigulu Nchemba has directed officials at the Regional Search and Rescue Coordination Centre in Mwanza to ensure the facility operates 24 hours with high efficiency.

The centre, which costs approximately 19.8bn/-, aims to strengthen search and rescue services, particularly for activities taking place in the Lake Zone.

The directive was issued today, January 23, 2026, during the Prime Minister’s inspection visit to the facility. He emphasized that rescue services are lifesaving operations and warned that there will be zero tolerance for negligence, drowsiness, or delays in assisting when needed.

“This is a lifesaving job. Negligence, sleeping on duty, or delaying assistance puts the lives of Tanzanians at risk. This centre must operate 24 hours a day,” Dr Nchemba stressed.

He added that the construction of the centre is a clear demonstration of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan’s, commitment to serving Tanzanians and addressing various national challenges, particularly in the areas of safety and rescue services.

Dr Nchemba explained that the centre was initially planned to be built between 2018 and 2020, but construction stalled after development partners withdrew. However, President Samia directed the government to proceed with the project using domestic funds to ensure fishermen and other citizens receive safety services during their activities.
