PM envisions major reforms to harmonise the public-private sector’s pay structures

DODOMA: THE Tanzanian government has acknowledged significant salary disparities between public servants and their counterparts in the private sector, prompting plans for major reforms to harmonise pay structures.
Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba revealed this when presenting the Prime Minister’s Office budget for the 2026/2027 financial year in the Parliament in Dodoma on Wednesday, noting that about 7,447 public servants are currently receiving salaries that are inconsistent with their job responsibilities.
He noted that as of March 26 this year, the government had spent 14.34bn/- on personal salary arrangements for the affected employees.
Additionally, he said that the government sees the need to take deliberate measures to reduce the widening gap between public and private sector pay, while ensuring fairness within the public service.

Among the planned interventions is the harmonisation of salary structures to address imbalances and ensure that remuneration reflects the nature and scope of work performed.
He added that the government will also review the Public Service Act and its regulations governing special salary approvals, as well as guidelines on staff redeployment to align them with current needs.
Moreover, he said that a review of procedures for handling applications for special salary arrangements among public servants will be undertaken to enhance transparency and efficiency.
The reforms are expected to improve equity, motivation and overall performance within the public service.
