PCCB urges journalists to lead anti-corruption drive ahead of general elections

KILIMANJARO: KILIMANJARO Regional Bureau Chief of the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB), Mr Musa Chaulo, has called on journalists in the region to play a frontline role in the fight against corruption as the country prepares for the General Elections scheduled for October this year.
Mr Chaulo made the appeal recently while officiating a workshop organised by the PCCB, aimed at raising awareness among journalists about the detrimental effects of corruption during elections.
The training also sought to empower media professionals to educate the public using their platforms.
“I would like to thank all of you for responding to this call and participating in this workshop. We acknowledge the commendable work you do through your profession, which is why we want to collaborate with you. We believe your efforts can help people understand the dangers of corruption during the elections,” he said.
He emphasised that media involvement was critical in fostering informed decisionmaking among voters, adding that: “Your cooperation will encourage citizens to listen to aspirants carefully and elect ethical leaders committed to working with their constituents in development activities instead of choosing those who offer bribes to secure votes.”
Mr Chaulo described corruption as a major threat to democracy, noting that it undermines transparency in the electoral process, distorts voters’ decisions and sometimes results in the election of irresponsible leaders.

He warned that such trends erode public trust in democratic institutions and could ultimately jeopardise national peace.
“Corruption, just like in any other area, is a big threat to democracy. It destroys the transparency of the electoral process, distorts voters’ decisions and can result in leaders who are not accountable to the people,” he said.
Highlighting the importance of ethical journalism, Mr Chaulo urged media practitioners to uphold professional integrity, provide accurate information and refrain from conduct that could tarnish their credibility during the election period.
He further assured the media of PCCB’s willingness to work closely with journalists in disseminating anticorruption education and promoting public awareness on the importance of engaging in clean and fair politics during this year’s elections.
“If journalists fulfil their responsibilities effectively in the fight against corruption, it will significantly boost society’s chances of winning this battle,” he concluded.
