Tanzania’s Traffic Commander inspects drivers’ training in bid to curb road carnage

ARUSHA: DRIVERS and conductors of passenger buses have been urged to pay close attention to the training they receive in driving schools, with the goal of achieving positive outcomes that will help improve the transport sector and reduce road accidents.

This call was made by the Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police (SACP) William Mkonda, who is also the National Traffic Police Commander, during his visit to the Arusha Technical College to assess how the institution conducts driving training and prepares service providers in the passenger bus sector.

Commander Mkonda emphasized that the Police Force has the responsibility to supervise and inspect driving schools across the country to ensure the quality of education offered and the relevance of the curricula in producing competent drivers who adhere to road safety laws.

Additionally, the Commander commended the management of Arusha Technical College for improving the teaching infrastructure, especially in the driving department, by using modern training equipment. He urged the college leadership to continue overseeing the training effectively so as to produce skilled and disciplined drivers, which will greatly contribute to reducing road accidents.

In another development, Commander Mkonda issued a stern warning to some bus owners and drivers who engage in the practice of overloading passengers, particularly during this period when schools are closing. He stressed that strict legal action will be taken against anyone found violating traffic laws.

Commander Mkonda concluded by calling for continued collaboration between the Police Force, driving schools, and stakeholders in the transport sector to ensure enhanced safety for all road users.
