PCCB uncovers tax oversight, recovers 10.9m/- in Kilimanjaro
KILIMANJARO: THE Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) in Kilimanjaro Region has managed to save over 10.9m/- of government funds between April and June this year.
This was revealed over the weekend by the PCCB Regional Head, Musa Chaulo, during a press briefing on the bureau’s performance for the second quarter of 2025.
“In monitoring the construction of a new school project worth over 500m/- in Hedaru, Same District, we discovered that funds had been spent without deducting the required withholding tax,” said Chaulo.
Following PCCB’s intervention, the Same District Council took corrective action. In May 2025, the council leadership paid over 9.9m/- in withholding tax to the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA).
Chaulo further noted that under the TAKUKURU-Rafiki initiative, the bureau investigated a complaint filed by 117 members of the Mwenge Shirimatunda Cooperative Society, who had contributed 986,000/- since 2016 without receiving any updates on the funds’ usage.
“After a thorough investigation, the chairman of the cooperative society refunded the money in April 2025,” he stated.

During the same quarter, the TAKUKURU-Rafiki project reached 10 wards, receiving a total of 115 complaints. Of these, 99 were resolved, while 16 were still under review.
Mr Chaulo also said that the bureau received a total of 97 complaints during the period, 50 related to corruption and 47 unrelated to graft.
In terms of legal proceedings, the PCCB handled 22 ongoing court cases, including four new cases.
Two of the ongoing cases involve grand corruption, he added. Mr Chaulo said PCCB will continue to intensify public education campaigns on the dangers of corruption during the election period.
“Our aim is to ensure voters refrain from engaging in corrupt practices during the entire General Election process, scheduled for October 29, 2025,” he said.
