OGTL, Tanzania Scouts join forces to promote LPG safety

Dar es Salaam: THE Oryx Gas Tanzania (OGTL) and the Tanzania Scouts Association have signed a three-year partnership agreement aimed at expanding public awareness on the safe use of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) through the Scouts’ extensive youth network across the country.

The signing ceremony in Dar es Salaam today also marked the launch of the LPG Safe Use Guidebook, a publication designed to educate consumers on the proper handling and use of cooking gas.

Speaking at the event, OGTL Managing Director Benoit Araman described the guidebook as an important learning and teaching resource that will support efforts to improve LPG safety while helping the country accelerate the adoption of clean cooking energy.
He said that although the company has obligations to its shareholders, employees and the government, it considers the public its most important stakeholder and has therefore invested in safety education to reduce accidents caused by improper use of LPG.
“We want to see more Tanzanians using LPG safely. We cannot reach millions of users on our own, which is why we have partnered with the Tanzania Scouts Association, whose vast youth network can take this important message to communities across the country,” Araman said.
Under the agreement, Oryx Gas will train Scout instructors using a “train-the-trainer” approach, enabling them to pass on knowledge about safe LPG use to communities nationwide.

Mr Araman said the guidebook was developed in collaboration with Oryx Gas Training Manager, Peter Ndomba, to serve as a lasting reference for LPG users despite the growing shift towards digital learning.

“It is important to have a resource that people can hold in their hands, read repeatedly and refer to whenever they need guidance on the safe use of LPG,” he said.
He officially launched the guidebook, announcing that it will be available in both printed and digital formats to ensure wider public access.

Mr Ndomba, who authored the guidebook, said alongside campaigns promoting clean cooking energy, safety education remains essential for every LPG user.

Speaking at the event, Tanzania Chief Scout Rashid Mchatta said the partnership represented more than the signing of an agreement, describing it as the beginning of a journey to equip young people with knowledge, skills and opportunities that will contribute to national development.

He said the Scouts movement believes that disciplined and knowledgeable young people are a vital force for Tanzania’s development, adding that the collaboration would strengthen youth capacity in clean energy use, safety awareness and employment opportunities.
Tanzania Scouts Chief Commissioner Abubakar Mtitu said the partnership reflects the organisation’s commitment to serving communities and empowering young people to help address societal challenges.

He said the Scouts would continue to use their nationwide youth network to promote safe LPG practices and encourage the adoption of clean cooking energy, contributing to improved public welfare and environmental sustainability.
